In 1992 God ordained Reverend John N. Robinson Jr. to organize the Spirit of Christ Missionary Baptist Church. The space at 4400 Stamp Road, Temple Hills, Maryland was leased for the home of this mission. In 1998, the walls came down and God blessed us to expand our sanctuary, tripling our space. We were also blessed to extend our classroom space to the third floor. This allowed us to have four additional classrooms and a library. The classrooms were used for Sunday school, Bible study, New Members Orientation, workshops and summer camp. The library had four computers, which the church family and campers used. We were also blessed with a Baptism Pool.
Our church seeks to do the will of God as we meet the needs of God’s people. With the committed and dedicated members who understand that God wants our time, talents, and tithes, we have effectively made a difference in many lives. Our aim is to save the lost, nourish the saved and make disciples as grow.
Over the years, our ministries have grown in numbers and accomplishments. Beginning in the year 2001, because of our size and our goals, our ministries were distributed among the Ministers and Deacons to oversee. We refer to this as M.O.M. (Ministers Overseeing Ministries). We have been blessed with the following ministries; Ushers, Nurses, Seniors, Homeless, Youth, Women, Men of Faith, Missionary, Life Management, Foreign Missions, Dance, Evangelism, Transportation, Hospitality, Audio, Communications and Christian Education. Highlighting a few of our ministries: we have purchased two vans for transportation; we have monthly food distributions; and a homeless ministry that provides food and clothing for those living on the streets and in shelters. In 1999, a delegation of twelve was sent to Franklin, Virginia to assist the flood victims with food, clothes and money. In 1995-2005 we ministered monthly to our senior citizens with a service at 1100 Owens Road Senior Citizens Building.
Our 2009 Ministry highlights included starting a Kings Kids Choir for children ages 3 to 8 years, started Young Adult Sunday School classes for members ages 18-25 years (every fourth Sunday, service is not under the leadership of our Young Adults), fed over 1,000 homeless people living on the streets of Washington, D.C., International/Foreign Missions – sent four missionaries to Africa and ministered to over 3,000 people, provided monetary gifts to two congregations in Sierra Leone, Africa, and donated 200 Bibles, assembled a group of members to receive training and ministering on Sundays at a local prison; provided transportation for residents to weekly services, provided meals to nursing home residents following service, provided tuition assistance for three of our ministers to matriculate at the Washington Baptist Seminary, provided tuition for two Deacons and three Deaconesses to enroll in continuous training at the Washington Baptist Seminary, and two of our Deacons graduated with a silver and gold certificate as part of a 2-year training course at the Washington Baptist Seminary.
We are a Bible teaching church. Through our Christian Education Department, we send delegates to the national Baptist Congress; the Hampton’s Ministers’ Conference; the Mt. Bethel Educational Congress; D.C. Vicinity and Educational Congress; and the National Christian Conference for Biblical Counseling.
God has moved us in such a way that we have been compelled towards “Making a Contribution That Counts.” Our contributions are bringing us blessings and allowing us to truly “Experience God” and to walk closer with Him. God has further blessed us to have a “Vision, Integrity, Structure and Accountability (VISA).” With the help of God and using VISA, we strive for “Economic, Educational, and Entrepreneurial Empowerment” for or church family and biological family.
God has given Pastor Robinson a new theme. We are “Moving Forward On a SURE (Service, Unity, Righteousness, Evangelism) Foundation.”
On December 2, 2001, we moved out of 4400 Stamp Road to our temporary location at Carmody Hills Middle School, in Oxon Hill, Maryland. We moved out with great anticipation that God was about to bless us with our new home at 8005 Cryden Way, Forestville, Maryland. Praise be to God, on February 27, 2002 we went to settlement and we are no longer renters but owners. In July 2002, we secured Bonds, as well as church pledges and contributions for the first phase of our renovation. We were able to sell our bonds yielding a high interest of 5-7% to family and friends.
Demolition and renovation started in 2002. During the renovations, we remained at Carmody Hills Middle School and there we maintained a high level of worship. With limited space, we were also able to maintain our ministries as best we could. On December 15, 2002, our first service was held at 8005 Cryden Way. What a day of rejoicing!
Renovations continue and we thank God for every contribution.
